NEWARK, NJ (February 21, 2017) — On Saturday, May 20, 2017, Leadership Newark, Inc. will host the 3rd Leadership Newark Summit at Rutgers University Newark, Paul Robeson Center – 350 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., Newark, NJ from 9AM to 3PM. The event includes an opening keynote with breakfast reception, luncheon keynote, and breakout workshops. “Destination Newark: People, Place, Progress,” will focus on means and modalities to establish a sustainable water, transportation, energy, and digital communications infrastructure, as well as a track dedicated to civic-minded, professional development. As the nation’s third oldest metropolis, this convening marks a crucial step in preparing for cross-sector growth, an expanding economic landscape, and a responsible environmental footprint. Destination Newark: The White Paper will memorialize recommendations, perspectives, and best practices shared in the summit’s three tracks: Get Clean & Connected: Water, Gas & Electric, and Digital Communications, Newark On The Move: Newark By Sea, Land & Air, and Servant Leadership: Personal and Professional Development. The white paper will be published post-event.

United States Senator Cory Booker will deliver the luncheon keynote address speaking to the imperative nature of infrastructure planning, investment, and evaluation. As a former Mayor of the City of Newark, Senator Booker is uniquely qualified to speak to Newark’s framework, while providing a legislative context and perspective on infrastructure measures taking hold across the nation.

‎“As the former Mayor of Newark, I know how critical robust infrastructure networks are to the vitality of our great city and I am thrilled to work with partners like Leadership Newark in strengthening these efforts,” said U.S. Senator Cory Booker.  “Investment in key infrastructure projects like the Gateway Program are not only vital to the safety and efficiency of our nation’s surface transportation network, but they also power the engine that drives our region’s economy, boost job creation, and help further the economic development we have seen in Newark over the past decade.”

“There are hundreds of professionals throughout this city who care about its capacity for balanced, smart growth. Newark relies on its infrastructure systems to work efficiently especially in anticipation for economic expansion. Those interested in enjoying an accessible Newark will roll up their sleeves at the summit and get involved in stabilization efforts,” states Celia King, Leadership Newark, CEO.
